Located in Golden Valley MN
By building an ADU on our existing property in Golden Valley, we maintain residence in our community, downsize as we age, and customize the house to fit our needs. We will also incorporate Universal Design elements into this home.
Our goal is to begin excavation in the summer of 2024, and have the house built by Fall 2024. Our timeline will be adjusted for possible delays in financing, permitting, weather, labor shortages, or the ability to obtain building materials and appliances on time.
We have remodeled four homes in the last five years on our own, but have never built a home from the ground up. We have always done the work ourselves, and this will be our first experience utilizing a General Contractor.
Building a small home means finding creative ways to utilize the space and make it feel larger. Windows and window placement are the key focus of this Miami home, which was our design inspiration. The clerestory windows allow in a ton of natural light, and enhance the home's connection to nature.
Recessing the front door creates a welcoming courtyard, while the window placement on the front exterior provides a striking design and interior maximization of wall space.
The U-shaped design of this home design would work well with the lot shape and size that we have available on our property. Using the middle interior of the house as the communal gathering space creates great traffic flow - connecting the garage to the kitchen for ease of carrying in groceries, allowing privacy in the bedrooms wing, and giving an overall bigger "feel" to the plan.
The final design of our ADU incorporates the U-shaped design, window placement and natural light features that we found in other designs.
The clerestory windows are a defining feature of this home, and we are excited to see it come to fruition.
